"How Do I Know if My Child is Gifted?"
"Is my child gifted?" That is a question many parents ask. Finding the answer is not always easy because gifted children are individuals. They are as different from one another as non-gifted children are from other non-gifted children. However, gifted children have enough in common to make it possible to determine if a child is gifted or not. One just has to consider several different factors.
Defining Characteristics of Giftedness

Ruf Estimates of Levels of Giftedness
Useful info and charts on identifying and distinguishing between different levels of giftedness from infancy upwards
Social and Emotional Problems affecting Gifted Children
Gifted Children have distinct social and emotional needs arising from the giftedness. These can lead to problems if not understood and properly nurtured.
Overexcitability and the Gifted
Polish psychologist Kazimierz Dabrowski identified five of these intensities, which he called "overexcitabilities" or "supersensitivities": Psychomotor, Sensual, Emotional, Intellectual, and Imaginational. Gifted children tend to have more than one of these intensities, although one is usually dominant.

Other Relevant Information on Parenting the Gifted
Natural Temperament and Learning Styles must also be considered. Research indicates these two factors are essentially inborn and that a child's maximum potential can only be reached when these factors are taken into consideration. The following links provide only selective information. A more comprehensive resource will be made available later.
